We had a business lunch here in March and the food was exquisite although I couldn't understand why there was no one else there! However I highly recommend it, they bake their own bread and everything!
We ate here recently to celebrate my daughters birthday. The restaurant is located in sleepy Alfriston in East Sussex. The menu is small but well balanced with a choice of five starters, five mains and five mouth watering puddings. I chose a Carpaccio of Venison for my starter which was excellent. To follow, I had a beautifully cooked lamb in red wine jus with vegetables and to complete the meal I had rice pudding with warm cherries with a dash of something strong and alcoholic.
Washed down with a bottle of Fleurie, I felt very satisfied. My wife and daughter both agreed that the meal was really good value for what we paid. The service was excellent, our waitress being friendly and helpful, and obviously knowledgable about both wine and the dishes being served.
The restaurant is small and was very quiet when we ate there but it was worth the drive. In addition, there is a lovely garden area where you could have your pre dinner drinks with a lovely view of Alfriston Church. I would recommend Moonrakers for any occasion. I am already looking forward to our next visit. We chanced upon Moonrackers when visiting the Clergy House, we had intended eating at the hotel on the corner only to find that they no longer served lunch. Moonrackers was close by and looked interesting so we gave it a go and were pleased we did.
It's a small restaurant but very comfortably furnished, the set lunch of three courses are well priced, portions are on the small side but very tasty and we came away full.
If in the area we would go again. Walking around the pretty village of Alfriston, we found Moonrakers and decided to give it a try. The food is excellent. Well presented and full of flavour. Service was good without being over attentive. A lovely lunch! We will certainly visit here again when in the area. Own or manage this property? Members of the UK Independence Party would probably regard a photograph of this as nothing short of porn. All it needed was a waft of Vaughan Williams's Lark Ascending and the picture would have been complete.
When the setting is as good as this, as unforced as this - and the long-range forecast promises many more azure skies this year - the job of the food is very simple.
It doesn't have to succeed. All it has to do is not fail. For the most part, that's what the cooking at Moonrakers in Alfriston manages. At this point I would love to tell you that it is named after arguably the worst of the James Bond franchise though, as a year-old, slumped in a seat at the flicks in Weymouth during one summer holiday, I loved Moonraker.
James Bond! In a safari suit! In space! With lasers and everything! Instead, apparently, it takes its name from the local smugglers' habit of raking the river by moonlight for contraband. How disappointing. I thought Id be flagging at this point but the portions are perfectly proportioned so I was easily able to enjoy the mango puree, the dark chocolate brownie and a morceau of Brie de Meaux mousse.
Jellies , chocolate and fudge the size of dolly mixtures were served with the coffee and Head Chef, Ross Pavey, emerged from the kitchen to a well-deserved round of applause. If this has whetted your appetite, and I do hope it has, Moonrakers will be hosting their next Gourmet evening on Thursday, 4 February with an 8-course menu including tasting flights of wine for just And if youre wondering where you may have come across Moonraker before, it was the eleventh James Bond film starring Roger Moore and generally acknowledged as the worst Bond movie ever.
Unlike Moonrakers restaurant, which was simply the best. Bon appetit! They have a 32 tasting menu all year round but are hosting a gourmet Valentines Day dinner. At 55 for 7 courses with wine and a drink on arrival, its a perfect gift.
