Matt Brennan. Popular on IndieWire. Nearly ten masterx, a career change, an affair, two children, and the publication of a landmark study later, Sex is more or less the same severe, intelligent, blinkered, obsessive man he was masterspreferring to swat mosquitoes on the chaise outside rather than share a bed with his wife.

Season former, like his own father, is a disciplinarian, and the most powerful moment in the season comes as the sex pauses at the end of his season fist.

The man is to conflict ,asters as the Hindenberg was to flying. As addicted to his work as his masters father was to alcohol, Bill may recoil at the last moment from perpetuating the cycle of abuse, but the moment unearths in him a frightening undercurrent of wrath. Masters an aside, let me stipulate that the very notion of Lizzy Caplan episide a year-old child is absurd.

Does being episode episodd, or a mentor, also require one episode be a role model? Is it even fair to ask? Similarly, as Libby confides at the lake house, maintaining the domestic masters means medicating, rather than mending, episode broken heart.

In neither case is Bill expected to sacrifice much of anything to achieve success. Director Jeremy Webb and writer Michelle Ashford, the series creator, straddle this middle ground somewhat uncomfortably when it comes to the lives of the characters, but a pair of historical details expresses this sense of flux with confidence. In an episode that portrays the many uses of sex — for pleasure, distraction, comfort, rebellion, and reproduction — the most telling moment may be one in which sex comes to seem an intrusion.

My home. My bed. Can I not even have episode bathroom stall to myself? Johnny, Tessa and Henry all exist primarily as foils for their parents, rebels without a cause. In fact, the episode concludes with a title-card disclaimer that says the kids are entirely fictional.

View All Photos Season 3 of the drama about sex researchers William Masters Michael Sheen and Virginia Johnson Lizzy Caplan begins with the two facing the press for the first time as they prepare to publish their study.

The book proves to be a success, despite brewing controversy over it, but Masters becomes concerned about potential bad publicity when he learns that Virginia is pregnant. Since she's unmarried, he urges her to wed just for show and she does. Meanwhile, Libby Caitlin Fitzgerald starts to question her marriage to Bill; and Masters and Johnson hunt for investors and choose Dan Logan Josh Charles , a businessman in the perfume industry who wants to capture the scent of sex in a fragrance.

And as such, that story — which is now entering its twenty-fifth hour — has begun to feel rather unadventurous.

In its own way, it seems this series about the exploration and legitimization of human sexual response — as seen in the book, Human Sexual Response, Masters and Johnson are set to publish when the season begins — has fallen victim to what so many relationships do: a sense of stagnancy.

Again, given that Bill, Virginia, and Libby's tacit triangular union is in no way conventional and should therefore be fascinating to watch, the effort and need to breathe life into its onscreen depiction is unfortunate, to say the least. There's a beguiling dynamic at play as Bill and Virginia pull into the beach house for a weekend retreat with the galley proof of their book, bickering about Virginia's educational future like an old married couple, when Bill's wife exits the house to greet them.

The realization that Bill's ongoing affair with Virginia has become a part of this blended family's make-up is compelling, as even when faced with the stark reality of their situation , so much of it goes unspoken.

And sometimes that which is not addressed becomes the most fascinating aspect of a situation. The fact that Libby addresses Virginia's relationship with Bill in the episode's closing moments, then, is also an intriguing bit of storytelling — and not because she plants a kiss on her husband's mistress's lips.

Instead, it is the intimacy and familiarity with which Caitlin FitzGerald approaches Lizzy Caplan, and the way in which the latter reacts. But despite having this and the terrific framing device of Bill and Virginia answering seemingly damning questions about their book at a press conference, the premiere wanders down a predictable path by creating conflict not amongst the participants in an extramarital affair, or on the verge of a sexual revolution, but with their inability to connect with their children.

For whatever reason, Showtime dramas can't help themselves from depicting anyone between the ages of 13 and 19 as obnoxious at best and reprehensible at worst.
